It’s Not You, It’s Not Me, It’s Us: The Job Search Dating Game and the Tech That Can Save the Day

Do our interests and ambitions align? Is he someone I can grow with? Will she challenge me to be better? These are questions you may find yourself asking when contemplating a new relationship. But they are also the questions every startup or high-growth company asks itself when considering a candidate – and as a job seeker, they should be the questions you’re thinking about as well.

Over the past year, I’ve been lucky enough to interview hundreds of eager applicants excited about joining AlphaSights – the vast majority of whom will not receive an offer. And while less than 1% of applicants will ultimately find themselves here, the majority of candidates I speak to are incredibly impressive and will undoubtedly go on to successful careers. So why only 1%? Because the hiring process isn’t just about identifying highly skilled candidates – if it was, my job would be significantly easier. It’s about finding people with a combination of skills, traits, and goals that align with our vision for the company and the role both now and in the future. Fortunately, the recruiting and job tech scene is finally catching up to the dating tech scene (and often borrows some of the same ideas).

Swipe left. Swipe Right. Five years ago these phrases would have garnered confused looks and a host of questions, but today they’re core to the modern dating lexicon. Now, companies like Jobr and Switch are bringing the same approach to the job search with great initial results. Quickly browse jobs from innovative companies (like AlphaSights!) from the comfort of your phone and signal your interest to employers with a quick swipe. If a company likes your background as well, you’ll be paired in conversation. With greater control over the process, you can make sure you’re making the best choice for your career.

The Gamification of Personality Tests

At some point in your life, you’ve probably taken a personality test or career assessment – hundreds of unrelated questions that supposedly predict your ideal job. Didn’t work for you? They didn’t for me either, but fortunately, companies like Pymetrics and ConnectCubed are bringing innovation to the playing field. Based on a neuro-scientific approach (no, this isn’t an eHarmony ad), these companies use games to better assess things like your risk tolerance, interests, and learning style which helps match you with companies that truly make sense. Now you can spend more time engaging in high-quality conversations, and less time randomly blasting out your resume.

As a candidate, this may seem like an incredibly daunting process – but it doesn’t have to be. These tools can help you go beyond career centers, job boards, and resume engines, prompting a genuine career search that creates an ideal match between you and your future employer. And trust me, when you’ve found your match, you’ll know it.
